Fuel ethanol is produced by the fermentation of sugar or starch-based crops. The main sources of sugar required to produce ethanol come from fuel or energy crops, i.e. crops including sugar cane, corn, wheat and sugar beet that are grown specifically for fuel production. The production of ethanol or ethyl alcohol from sugar or starch-based feedstocks is one the oldest value-added processing methods. Although the basic steps have been known since ancient times, the process has been considerably refined in recent years to result in today's highly efficient process.
